Associate Contracts (2026)
Based on our Q1 2026 survey of 450+ UK practices, the landscape for associate pay has stabilised, though regional disparities in UDA rates remain stark.
The Standard Split
The days of the flat 50/50 split are largely gone for new contracts, especially in corporate settings, though it remains common in established independent practices.
| Item | Corporate Avg | Independent Avg |
|---|---|---|
| Private Revenue Split | 45% | 45 - 50% |
| Lab Bill Contribution | 50% | 50% |
| Hygienist Referral Cut | 0% | 0 - 10% |
UDA Rates by Region
NHS dentistry continues to face recruitment challenges. UDA rates reflect this, with higher rates offered in coastal and rural areas compared to major cities.
- London & South East: £12.00 - £13.50
- Midlands: £13.50 - £14.50
- North & Yorkshire: £14.00 - £15.50
- Coastal / Rural (Hard to fill): £15.00 - £17.00+
The "Bad Debt" Clause
A critical clause to check in any new agreement: who carries the risk if a private patient doesn't pay? Standard BDA-style contracts usually stipulate that the associate is only paid on receipts (money collected), not production. Ensure reception protocols for upfront deposits are robust to protect your income.
Licence Fees vs Employment
Associates are typically engaged under a "Licence to Occupy" (self-employed) rather than an employment contract. HMRC scrutinises this closely. To maintain self-employed status, the contract must usually allow the associate to provide a locum, and the associate must have clinical freedom.
Model Your Pay
Don't rely on gross estimates. Use our Associate Pay Calculator to factor in your specific UDA target, expected private gross, and lab bill deductions to see your actual monthly take-home (before tax).
