Medical Emergencies CPD
The GDC strongly recommends at least 10 hours of verifiable CPD in Medical Emergencies per 5-year cycle, with an emphasis on taking at least 2 hours annually.
Core Curriculum
Your verifiable training must cover the immediate management of common medical emergencies likely to occur in a primary care dental setting, including:
- Cardiac Arrest (Basic Life Support & AED)
- Anaphylaxis (Intramuscular Adrenaline)
- Asthma (Salbutamol administration)
- Hypoglycaemia (Glucagon / Oral Glucose)
- Epileptic Seizures (Midazolam)
- Syncope and Choking
In-Practice vs Online Training
While online theory is acceptable for refreshing knowledge (e.g. pharmacology of emergency drugs), practical Basic Life Support (BLS) must involve hands-on simulation with a mannequin. Many practices book an annual half-day closure for an external trainer to visit the site.

Common Mistakes
- Relying entirely on online CPD: Practical CPR with rescue breaths and chest compressions requires physical assessment.
- Ignoring the emergency drugs kit: Training must include the specific layout of your practice's emergency kit. If you buy a new emergency kit, the team must be briefed.
